Dear Parents,

Among the most important work that is attempted here at Our Lady of Sorrows is evangelization-- that is the work of passing on the faith to the next generation.  Essentially that work is done at home.  For that reason the church refers to the family as the domestic church.  It is in the home that the presence of Christ is first realized, or at least, that should be our experience.  It is in the sacraments that we experience the completion and fullness of God’s grace and presence.  When family life is centered on the presence of God in the sacraments and in the home-- our mission is being accomplished.

Parents have got to be the first teachers of their children in the ways of faith.  The obligation rests firmly with our parents. This year children in grades 1-8 will be issued a textbook to take home for their class level.  Books are on loan and should be returned at the end of the school year.  Parents will be expected to see that one chapter with an accompanying take-home chapter quiz be completed before each class as assigned by the teacher.

Families are encouraged to take advantage of generations of faith in the family and frequent use of the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession), and most importantly, Sunday Mass as a means to accomplish this end. Give serious thought to how you evangelize your family.  Being Catholic does not involve magic.  We do not graduate to different levels by Baptism, First Confession and Communion, Confirmation and Matrimony.  Sacraments are encounters and experiences with Christ.  If there is no “carry through” in the home—this means faithfully attending Sunday mass, holy days of obligation, and Christian example—then our work of evangelization is fruitless.  If you really love God and His church then you must be demonstrating this to your children.

Building/Classroom Rules/Dress Code

 

Breakfast is available in the cafeteria from 8:15 until 8:30 am

All children should remain in the cafeteria until the upstairs door is opened.

Students should arrive no later than 8:40am so that classes can begin at 8:45 am with no/few late interruptions.

          A small book bag (tote bag) is recommended to carry textbook/papers to and from class.

  • Quiet orderly behavior is expected in all areas of the building, including restrooms.

  • Do not sit on tables or desktops.

  • No cell phones to be used in class or church

  • Obey the dress code:  All students should dress modestly and according to public school dress code. 

Boys:  shirt w/ collar (no tee shirts with messages etc) & khaki or dress pants

           Girls:  modest dress, skirt and blouse or dress slacks.  Skin tight    
           blue jeans are not considered appropriate for Sunday mass.

 SUNDAY MASS ATTENDANCE IS NOT AN OPTION—IT IS A MUST FOR PARENTS AND CHILD

I have read the above and understand that I am to help my child read a chapter in the book and complete a short quiz each week.  The book and quiz must be brought to class each Sunday.    Books should be returned in good condition in May or payment will be required.  A small tote bag should be used to carry the book back and forth.

 

I understand that parents should be attending mass with their children.  Kinder children will sit with their parents.  After mass, parents must come to the front pews for teachers to release children in grades 1-4.

 

Children should be encouraged to dress appropriately for Sunday mass when coming to CCD class.  Let us all set an example for our children to follow.
